About Underscore
Story
I make fast, hard, and melodic music. I'm known for Frenchcore, Speedcore, and Hardcore of all varieties, but I love most genres of EDM! My goal is for my art to reach as many listeners as possible.
Making art and sharing it with others is my absolute favorite thing to do. Even though I focus on music, I'm always trying to learn new creative skills! I do my own graphic design, video editing, 3D modeling, drawing/pixel art, writing, and (clearly) website design. Even if I can't create the most professional or polished products in my niche, I'm constantly improving and proud to be self-reliant!
Style/Aesthetic
Over the years, I've focused more on making my art recognizable. No matter the genre, I try to keep songs concise and varied, without any unnecessary elements or sections. I love combining brutal kicks with beautiful melodies!
My visual style is futuristic, digital, abstract, and often emulates the look of user interfaces. I try to make my visuals, and especially my videos, give a sense of a larger world beyond the music. I use the anime art style for most of my character art - the softer style adds personality and contrasts with the more precise and electronic elements.
Life and History
Ever since I can remember, I wanted to create things. As a kid, I went through many creative outlets, from origami, to Minecraft maps, to stop motion animation, to drawing. Music was a constant interest though, and I tried my hand at it many times. I loved the game Rock Band, and even started drumming because of it! My first memory of creating electronic music was playing around with FL Studio Mobile on my brother's iPad, and following that I downloaded a bunch of apps on my own iPod, to try it myself. Obviously, I was terrible at it!
On September 30th, 2015, I created my YouTube channel, though at the time it was for my stop-motion animations. I got FL Studio as a birthday present the year after, and began experimenting and improving... slowly. I think I improved slower than most, because I hardly used any online resources, instead choosing to figure everything out myself. At a certain point, I decided I no longer wanted to be known for animations, and renamed the channel to "Underscore", chosen from a suggestion by my parents. Around 2018, I took a huge interest in Beat Saber, and began also uploading Beat Saber content, in addition to music. My time listening to community songs in Beat Saber massively influenced my music taste, and introduced me to hardcore music. This was a big contrast to the relatively mainstream EDM genres I was previously interested in!
In 2020, after a nearly year-long break from music, I began taking Underscore more seriously. I set my mind to improving both my audio and visual quality. I decided to upload exclusively music content, and started making music that leaned into hardstyle, hardcore, and speedcore. This is really what I consider the start of my music career, as I was beginning to gain traction and attention from those outside my real-life circle. I've continued to put hours upon hours into my work each year, and hope that my music will be destroying subwoofers for many more years to come!
